Get Rid Of A Cold Sore
Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1. They are a highly contagious virus that appear on the mouth and face. Once you obtain the virus, it will never go away. There are dormant periods but the virus still exists in the body. The sores are believed to surface when triggers activate the virus. When a cold sore appears, it is often embarrassing and people will try anything to mask the sore until it goes away.
Cold sores start as a small irritation or bump under the skin. You may feel itching or tightening of the skin as the sore is forming. Avoid touching, rubbing or scratching at the site as this will further irritate the sore. This contact may also spread the virus to the rest of the face or another person. You should start treating the cold sore immediately.
Cleaning the cold sore regularly will aid in its disappearance. Scrubbing the sore with very hot water and antibacterial soap will reduce the risk of infection as well as cleanse away further fluids that may cause irritation. Take care not to overscrub as this will irritate and cause further infection to the cold sore. Even though the presence of a cold sore is embarrassing, avoid putting concealer or makeup on the sore. This may further aggravate the sore and delay healing.
Covering the cold sore with a petroleum based product will seal in the virus and protect the sore from infection. Be sure to wash your hands before and after applying pain relief or any product to the cold sore to prevent spreading the virus. Also be sure to work the product inward as to not spread it to another facial area.
Recognizing triggers will offer comfort during an outbreak. Hormonal fluctuations such as menstruation cause outbreaks of cold sores. Stress and anxiety also cause outbreaks. Avoid trigger foods such as salty chips and acidic sauces to minimalize outbreaks. Extreme weather such as cold winds and bright sun may cause an outbreak so protection is vital. Apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF that is designed for use on the lips. There are versions of lip protectant that include SPF protection. Begin cold sore treatments before exposure to these elements for maximum relief.
Be cautious after touching the cold sore. Do not share cups, makeup or cigarettes with anyone if you have cold sores. The virus is easily spread and minimal contact can risk passing the infection to someone else.
If a cold sore lasts longer than two weeks, consult a health care professional for medicated relief. There are prescriptions available that will rid the body of sores much faster than over the counter products. These medicines are typically topical products that should be applied at the first sign of an oncoming outbreak. They will also reduce triggering stress causing more outbreaks. The virus may spread to the eyes if not treated properly so immediate attention is required.
Cold sores can cause great pain. If pain relief is needed during an outbreak. use aspirin or ibuprofen. These products will reduce the swelling and pain from irritation and possibly reduce healing time. Anesthetic ointment may also relieve the topical pain.
